During a 10-country/17-day tour (Cosmos Tours), I got to DX LW, MW in St. Petersburg, Russia 15-17 Sept 2009. The following MP3 file is of 1215 kHz Absolute Radio - 14 transmitters (synchronized) in the UK as recorded in St. Petersburg, Russia - 4.8 MB) Note that at least one or more transmitters are not exactly in-synch with the others, so there is that warble/flutter notable in this recording (The Voice of Russia is running open (dead-air) carrier on 1215 from the Kaliningrad Enclave. I noted this effect all across Eastern Europe also. (MW Reception, and the FM airchecks, were recorded from a Sony ICF-SW7600GR with only loopstick antenna for MW and whip antenna for FM receptions).

Absolute Radio, formerly Virgin Radio, is one of my favourite UK radio stations - audible from Canada to Russia at night when MW-skip conditions allow. Below the Saint Petersburg photography, there is a link to an audio file of Virgin Radio recorded in Manitoba, Canada. (The great tune Absolute Radio was playing in the above audio file was "Walking on a Dream" by Empire of the Sun. Thanks to this station, I bought the wonderful CD they put out in 2009 - a hit abroad and in Japan, but never made airplay in North America!)

Absolute Radio 1215 kHz as received in Helsinki (Vaanta), Finland, on the evening of 17 September 2009 at about 2230 local time, on my Sony ICF-SW7600GR with just its loopstick antenna by the hotel window. Note the bad interference from The Voice of Russia also (transmitting from Kaliningrad). I have written to both Absolute Radio and The Voice of Russia with hopes that the interference can be cleared - likely by having The VOR move frequency off of 1215 kHz (since The VOR employs only one transmitter, presently beaming westward from Kaliningrad) so Absolute Radio and the VOR both can be in the clear all across Europe...and beyond... Greatest variety of FM-radio formats anywhere, anyplace - even compared to St. Petersburg! McGreevy

A fascinating country to visit and DX the radio-dials. You can hear Saudi Arabia with just a loopstick antenna (like I did - in my hotel room) facing south in St. Petersburg, Russia - on 1512 and 1521 kHz, albeit weak!)
